Quick Gems – “How to make decisions like President Obama”

President Obama has hundreds of decisions to make every day, on matters big and small. Researchers have found that making decisions is like doing push-ups. You can only do so many before fatigue sets in and your performance starts to drop. Obama understands that you need to focus your decision-making energy. “I don’t want to make decisions about what I’m eating or wearing because I have too many other decisions to make.” So he inhibits decision fatigue with 2 specific strategies:

1)    Pre-load minor decisions on food and clothing – Eg) Only white, gray or blue suits for Presidential functions. And his meals are always pre-decided and prepared beforehand.

2)    Pre-empt major decisions with a set of responses – Eg) Every email to the president ends with 3 options – Agree, Disagree or Discuss.

Let’s learn from President Obama in decision-making. Let’s learn to Pre-load / Pre-empt decisions so we spend our limited mental energy on what really matters.
