On the best sunny day, the most powerful magnifying glass will not light paper if you keep jerking or moving the glass. But if you focus and hold it still for a while, the paper will light up. That is the power of concentration.

We may have all the resources and opportunities to succeed, yet, without focus, we will achieve nothing. This is because we don’t know where to prioritize our attention, and everything we do becomes diluted. Being focused is a question of efficacy. It is about channeling and intensifying all your resources toward a certain task to engender a certain outcome.

People who lead cluttered, disorganised or distracted lives rarely are able to focus. Because they allow the demands for their time and attention to take them away from important tasks. They end up trying to multi-task and do too many things at once, all without impact.

The first step to getting the most out of any task is to get organised. Systemize everything that is at hand, and sort them out in order of priority. This may mean identifying which are urgent tasks and which are important. Decide what needs to be done first, take action towards fulfilling that task, accomplish it, then move on to your next. To be focused is to be systematic in doing things, one at a time.

Today, in order to achieve more, let’s learn to put first things first…Glenn Lim
