I had the privilege to be a youth camp trainer this week. The camp included a social-change component which required students to brain-storm solutions for current social problems/needs in the community.

During the showcase segment where teams had to present their project ideas & rationale, many of them impressed us judges with their passion & high ownership of their communities. When pressed for reasons why they (young people) wanted to do this, one group unanimously voiced out “If not us, who? If not now, when?…”

Needless to say, the panel of judges all applauded in approval. What a powerful lesson for us all to glean from a generation of idealists.

Most of us would tend to think of reasons for why we Can’t, rather than look at Possibilities. Most would allow ourselves to be handicapped by our unfavourable circumstances or limited resources. Most would also question why start with me, when there are others able to do the job…

Whatever the reasons (or excuses), the results will always be the same – Inaction.

Change can never occur with Inaction. Successful people take action not because they had favour shining on them, but because they used what they had, no matter how limited their resources. Never lose your Idealism. Make changes for the better of yourself and those around you…And start where you’re at…
