Break It Down…

What do you tend to do first when you begin your work each day?

Most would agree we feel more motivated to do simpler tasks like clearing emails, or even clearing the thrash, instead of bigger jobs like planning etc. That’s because clearing small tasks gives you a ‘Tick’ [√] right away – a sense of accomplishment. It helps you create small ‘Wins’ quickly, so that your psychological system is given a head-start boost to fuel the rest of the day, week, or month.

This is the same law of prioritisation that operates in our work. Eg) Turning around your business will take 5 years to give you just 1 ‘Tick’, and you will have nothing to show for on a daily basis. Our human tendency is to prioritize readily accessible ‘Ticks’ over real ‘Tasks’. The secret is to break down big tasks into little ticks.

For example, to implement a change-management strategy to your company:

[√] Mon – draft a memo on top 3 things that will benefit the company from this change.

[   ] Tue – type the memo, and send it to the whole office.

[   ] Wed – collate initial feedback / responses, and begin to classify them.

[   ] Thus – give considerations for most important issues/feedback, and craft response for it.

This upcoming week, let’s learn to create a Tick-list of our real Tasks!…Glenn Lim

Very true – we tend to do things that pay off the quickest psychologically though they may not be the most important.
