3 Tips to Build Mental Fitness!

Let’s face it, what keeps us going in our increasingly stressful lives today is a healthy mind. We need mental fortitude to face our world, work, and the people we constantly interact with. Like building physical strength, developing your mental muscle doesn’t happen by chance, or overnight. It requires high intent, and intensity. But most of all, u need the strategies. While there are lots of exercises that can help you become mentally strong, here are the 3 secrets to boost your mental fitness:

 

 

1) TALK TO YOURSELF, LIKE A GOOD FRIEND…

Scientists at the LNI (Laboratory of Neuro Imaging) estimate that most people have about 70,000 thoughts per day. That means you have 70,000 opportunities to either make yourself stronger, or tear yourself down.

Your thoughts greatly influence how you feel and behave. In fact, your inner monologue has a tendency to become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Thinking things like, “I will never do a good job” or “Nobody likes my ideas” can alter your behavior in a way that makes those predictions come true. Self-fulfilling prophecy.

Practice replacing negative and unconstructive thoughts with more realistic ones. When you notice yourself thinking something like, “I’m a loser and I’ll never amount to anything”, remind yourself that your thoughts aren’t necessarily true.

Ask yourself, “What would I say to a friend who said this about herself?” Then, offer those kind and encouraging words to yourself.

2) TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR EMOTIONS…

Allowing your emotions to control your life will deplete your mental strength. While there’s nothing wrong with being in a bad mood sometimes, staying stuck in a negative spot can be a slippery slope. Sadness can lead to self-pity, anger can turn to bitterness and mild anxiety can become paralyzing fear if you’re not careful.

A lot of problems stem from a desire to avoid discomfort. For example, people who fear failure often avoid new challenges in an effort to keep anxiety at bay. Avoiding emotional discomfort, however, is usually a short-term solution that leads to long-term problems.

Develop an awareness of how your emotions impact your life. Decide that you’re going to be in control of your emotions so they don’t control you. Face uncomfortable feelings head-on and take charge of your life. The more you practice tolerating discomfort, the more confidence you’ll gain in your ability to accept new challenges.

3) MAKE PRODUCTIVE CHOICES…

It’s impossible to feel mentally strong when you’re engaging in self-destructive behaviors that sabotage your best efforts. Yet, most people have a few unproductive habits that they indulge in on a regular basis.

Many of these bad habits seem minor—complaining about your boss, hosting your own pity party, or trying to please everyone—but they can wreak havoc on your mental state. When you perform these bad habits, right alongside your good ones, your efforts become counterproductive.

You only have a finite amount of time and energy in life. Devoting those resources to the things mentally strong people don’t do will tire you out and slow your progress toward your goals.

It’s a simple concept, and we see it on our computer keyboards everyday. So why not use it when we face challenging situations? It’s the same 3 Keys we can use to reboot our ‘heartware’ during problematic situations.

 

CONTROL your emotions:

Unforeseen situations can affect you emotionally. People can trigger you negatively. But that does not mean we have to react to them. Our negative responses only makes matters worse anyway. What we can and should do is to exercise control and manage our emotions. Especially our initial reactions, which may be impulsive, and leave us regretting later on. Remember, we cannot control what happens to us, but we can control and master what goes on within us. So when faced with unfavourable situations, calm down, stay cool, and be in control…

 

Look for ALTERNATIVE solutions:

Nothing gets better by complaining or harping over our predicament. The best way to move forward constructively is to search for alternative solutions. Ask ourselves what other options and possibilities there are within our power to take action. Make a list of contacts or resources available to us that can support us towards more favourable outcomes. This action alone helps create a positive vision for ourselves, and signals to our brains to adopt a ‘hunting’ behaviour mode, looking beyond our problems and ‘stuckness’, and focusing on solutions.

 

DELETE the negative voices:

Even after taking initial positive actions, there will be lingering doubts, skepticism, fear etc. We call them ‘residual’ negative emotions. They are the nagging voices that continue to haunt & taunt you. They question your decisions; remind you of your failures; attack your worth & confidence. They make you feel vulnerable, insecure, and even lousy. You become preoccupied with self-doubt. The best way to deal with them? – Delete them!…

Imagine you possess a Delete Button (somewhere conveniently accessible like your watch). Whenever those negative thoughts surface, physically reach out to your button and press it as you would on your keyboard. This simple kinesthetic movement signals to your brain an action that it registers as real, and it literally shuts out the voices in your head! How cool is that?

THE METAMORPHOSIS EFFECT

Recently I’ve been ‘bumping’ into lots of old acquaintances & friends. These are people who have not seen me for at least 6 – 7 years. And most of their initial reactions can be summed up with the below hilarious pic…!

Sure, my friends recognised me in person. It’s not like I aged that much! But for those whom I had the time to chat for a while, most noticed a difference in my outlook & attitude, in the way I shared my convictions & aspirations. They saw the evidence in my life (some of them actually follow me on social media). And they all pointed out this quality of ‘change’.

This really affirmed my own definition of ‘Transformation’. Especially since I teach it all the time…

Success guru Jim Rohn once said “Real transformation begins from the inside out”. A true test of change is in the way someone expresses changed beliefs / values from his inner core, that is evidenced in his outward behaviour. Yes, real transformation cannot be just discussed. It must be demonstrated.

That’s why its easy to talk about change if it was merely an activity of the mind. But real transformation requires tangible proof. And more often than not, those initial steps of change involve unpleasant experiences – a breaking down of the old nature & habits.

This is explicitly taught in Transformative Strategies and Leadership. No butterfly emerges out of a vacuum state. A butterfly is a new entity which ‘died’ to its old ‘identity’ of a caterpillar. And in its cocoon, the dying process is called Metamorphosis. If one wants to embrace a new destiny, one has to give up the old ways of being.

I contemplate my past 7-8 yrs with fondness every time someone remarks my ‘change’. There were no major events that I could recall. It’s not as if I underwent a drastic overhaul or makeover. What I realised was that I simply ‘died’ to little bits of the old me one day at a time. The old unconstructive ways of thinking, the old habits that kept me from reaching my goals, the unwillingness to accept change, the unwillingness to forgive & let go of my past…Some were painful decisions I had to take, many were inconvenient lifestyle choices I had to make.

And in this grand evolutionary process of ‘dying’, I emerge a new ‘ME’ every morning!…

So the next time someone says “You’ve changed!”, take it as a compliment that you are a better person today than you were yesterday! Happy Transformation!….Glenn Lim

In Memory – Mr Lee Kuan Yew

Lee Kuan Yew LKY Much tribute has been pouring in since the passing of our great hero Mr Lee Kuan Yew yesterday (23 Mar 2015). He has been hailed as the founding-father of Singapore, a visionary-leader, a true legend…

I’m not about to add more to the burgeoning list of accolades. But how can we not feel indebted to a man who almost single-handedly turned Singapore’s destiny around? It is easy to overlook history, become complacent, carry a sense of entitlement and become demanding, without understanding where we came from.

It’s rather ironical that in a short span of 2-3 days, one gets a crash-course in independent Singapore’s history far more informative than our years of history classes in school. These come in the form of the tribute programs aired on TV, online documentaries, testimonials etc. I, for one, am getting intimately aware of the real work & sacrifices made by our pioneer leaders only recently…and I’m ashamed.

…Ashamed of my lack of knowledge in local history. Ashamed of my ignorance of what LKY has actually done for our nation. Ashamed that I have taken many things for granted…

NINJA Bamboo Training!

Here’s a great lesson for every ordinary individual…

Japanese Ninjas are known for, among other things, their legendary skills for jumping. The Ninja warriors seemed to possess such astounding physical abilities that they are fabled as ‘flying ninjas’. The secret to their super-human ability is their unique training regime.

Training of a Ninja commences at an early age. These young disciples are first taught to plant and grow a personal bamboo shoot. Every day, the little boy has to jump over the little bamboo sapling. glenn articleOver the months and years, the bamboo shoot grows, and for most they grow fast. The boy is pushed to jump a little higher every day. By the time he is an adult, he seems to possess the magical power to just ‘fly-over’ high obstacles!…And it’s all attributed to his years of jumping over bamboo, daily!
